The Thomas E. Creek Veterans Administration Health Care System in Amarillo, Texas, has installed solar panels covering 720 parking spots, according to an article on the News Channel 10 website.
The energy savings have been significant at the Creek VA campus. The solar panels have cut energy consumption by roughly one third.
The old lights burned 12.3 million kilowatt hours annually. The solar-powered lights now burn about 8.3 million KWH.
According to VA officials, the old incandescent lights had a “kind of orange tint to them.” Employees had difficulty finding their vehicles; it made all the cars look orange.” The improved light quality has been especially helpful to female employees concerned about security in the parking lots, the VA said.
