More than 1,200 Veterans Administration medical centers and outpatient sites across the country are upgrading or replacing a boiler system, according to an article on the Power Engineering website
Most of the facilities will need to update their equipment, but some will require a full-system replacement.
One reason for the upgrades is regulatory. California, Texas, and New Jersey have new air quality standards that will not be met by older boiler systems.
A second reason for the VA system upgrade is to address these cost concerns. The upgraded systems do not require air filters and offer quick-change, dual-fuel capabilities, switching between gas and oil firing in less than three minutes, the article said.
