Rebuilding Vermont State Hospital after a 2011 hurricane offered opportunities to bring the facility into the 21st century, according to an article on the Behavioral Healthcare website. The design team looked at European hospital strategies to balance the security needs of the patients and staff with a calming interior design that provides privacy for residents while reducing the potential for aggression, the article said.
These include plans to begin demolition of current structure and hospital site preparation in 2026 and open the outpatient center and ambulatory surgery center in 2027.
