The WellSpan York Hospital Surgical & Critical Care Tower expansion project is one of the most significant healthcare projects the regional community has seen. This $427 million investment is designed to meet the growing healthcare needs of the region.
WellSpan York Hospital serves a diverse population with an increasing demand for specialized healthcare services. In FY24 alone, the hospital provided care for over 94,000 emergency department visits, 31,666 admissions and more than 23,000 surgical cases.
The hospital team also handled 6,700 interventional cardiology cases, 4,484 non-interventional cardiology cases and provided life-saving care to 2,397 trauma patients. In addition, they supported 368 NICU patients, discharged 1,095 stroke patients and managed the needs of over 20,000 cardiovascular patients.
With York County’s population growth outpacing the state average—and additional growth projected in surrounding counties—it’s apparent the region’s healthcare needs are rapidly increasing.
The new eight-story surgery and critical care tower will feature:
- 21 advanced, larger surgical suites, including three hybrid ORs for complex vascular, neuro and cardiac procedures.
- An expanded ICU with four new floors and 96 beds.
- A modernized Interventional Radiology suite with the latest mono-plane and bi-plane imaging equipment, new procedure rooms for ultrasound-guided interventions and updated prep and recovery areas, which opened in October 2024.
- Enhanced anesthesia and pain management spaces to support specialized care.
