Why aren't more facility managers embracing sustainability?

Not every facility manager is able to prioritize energy efficiency projects

Despite well-publicized moves toward sustainable energy programs, not every facility manager is able to prioritize energy efficiency projects, no matter how positive the impact it may make on the bottom line, according to an article on the FacilityCare website.

“Every facility director whom I’ve talked to in the last two years has had to cut not just hundreds of thousands but more like millions of dollars out of their budgets. So while energy efficiency will save money in a budget-cutting era, most facilities people are busy just keeping their heads on their shoulders," Laura Faye’, owner of BLUE Environmental Performance Consulting, said in the article.

“It’s not that energy efficiency or plastics recycling or waste minimization isn’t valid or viable across a number of key performance indicators. It’s just the nature of healthcare today,” she said.

When budgets do allow room for a new investment, FMs are generally competing with revenue-generating technology for those funds.
