Turnaround Life joins Springfield College sponsoring Domestic Violence: A Human Rights Issue Workshop Friday, October 6th

Join us Friday October 6, 2017, Springfield faculty, Dr. Janice Hudson will be offering a workshop on domestic violence educating participants on the abuse incurred by women and men alike. The workshop will be held from 8:30am until 12:30 pm at the Springfield College, Tampa Bay Campus located at 10117 Princess Palm Ave, Tampa, 33610.

Domestic Violence: Not a “Woman’s Issue” – A Human Rights Issue will be a fully interactive workshop examining the complex nature of domestic violence as a human rights issue and as a nexus to human trafficking. Victims of domestic violence rely on different helping professionals across some social systems for support. Despite widespread attempts to educate the social sector, the judicial system, and the public, it is often narrowly perceived. This narrow perception often results in re-victimization by the very same systems instituted to help victims. This deep learning experience offers an opportunity to acquire new knowledge and skills as well as increase awareness and sensitivity.

In 2016, according to the Florida Coalition Against Domestic Violence, 105,668 crimes of domestic violence were reported to Florida law enforcement agencies resulting in 63,193 arrests.  Many survivors of domestic violence, however, do not report their abuse for fear of retaliation from their abusers or fear of being kept from reporting the abuse in general. This means, in the state of Florida, we may never fully know how many individuals are being abused. 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have experienced some form of physical abuse according to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

If you are an area nonprofit and would like to attend, please contact President of the Springfield Community Advisory Board, Jackie Sue Griffin, MBA, MS at jackiegriffin72@gmail.com to qualify for a potential scholarship to attend the event.  Jackie serves as Director of Development for Turnaround Life, Inc.
