New Buffalo children's hospital had difficult birth

John R. Oishei Children's Hospital was met with fierce community opposition

John R. Oishei Children's Hospital in Buffalo, N.Y., was met with fierce community opposition when it was first proposed, according to an article on The Buffalo News website.

The initial attempt nearly 18 years ago to move Women and Children's Hospital from Bryant Street was not popular.

At one point, in 2002, thousands of people, including sports stars Jim Kelly and Pat LaFontaine, crowded Niagara Square in support of a campaign to "Save Our Children's Hospital" and keep it where it was founded in 1892, the article said.

The new hospital has the latest in medical technology and design. A connected outpatient center replaces dated facilities that were costly to maintain.
