Madison Fire Administration Offices and Fire Station #1 Earn LEED Gold Certification

The City of Madison (Wis.) Fire Department Administration offices and Fire Station #1 have achieved LEED® Gold certification from the United States Green Building Council (USGBC). Eppstein Uhen Architects (EUA) designed and Findorff constructed the Ovation mixed-use building that houses the Fire Administration offices and remodeled the attached Fire Station #1 to improve the function of the space with sustainable components and finishes.

The Fire Administration offices and adjoining Fire Station No. 1, located at 314 W. Dayton St., are now state-of-the-art spaces. The design emphasis was on energy efficiency; particularly focusing on improving insulation and adding high-efficiency heating and air conditioning systems. The result was energy cost savings of 41% over baseline buildings.

The City of Madison approached the planning, design and construction of the new station with the goal of exceeding existing standards for sustainability and environmental performance. Aiming for Silver, the project achieved LEED® Gold with high scores in alternative transportation, optimizing energy, waste management, and use of low emittance materials. Additionally, 82% of the construction waste generated on site was diverted from landfills.

“The long-standing mission of the City of Madison Fire Department is to protect the lives and property of the City of Madison. We carry out our mission while keeping environmental impacts at the front of our decisions. This LEED® Gold standard provides evidence that the Fire Department is committed to long term sustainability in our community. We are very proud that our partners at Eppstein Uhen Architects were able to take our shared vision and create a state-of-the-art facility that is a leader for sustainability in the community and, most importantly, highly functioning. The facility meets the needs of the Fire Department today, and will continue to meet the needs for many years to come.”
