Private security guards are performing some triage duties at Winnipeg's Misericordia Health Centre, according to an article on the Winnipeg Free Press website.
Staff with Securitas Canada are now stationed just inside the front doors at Misericordia Health Centre telling would-be patients that the urgent care center is no longer open around the clock. Security staff have been told to let in patients requiring emergency eye care.
The overnight shift at the urgent care centre recently was cut after less than two weeks’ notice. One doctor and nurse remain on staff overnight to care for patients who remain in the facility.
“Obviously, our position would be that security guards are not triage nurses," Sandi Mowat, president of the Manitoba Nurses Union, said in the article.
