Healthcare facilities can use Real Time Location Systems (RTLS) to track visits to hand hygiene stations, according to an article on the Tech.co website.

When healthcare professionals wash their hands, the electromagnetic field emitter within the RTLS device triggers their badge tags and transmits the action to the system.

The electronic monitoring device can identify those using the handwashing station without impeding workflow. The data can reveal patterns and increase handwashing hygiene adherence.

According to the CDC, hand-hygiene adherence rates have averaged at about 40 percent between 1994 and 2000.
