Calif. hospital looking at options after seismic retrofit funding denied

Hospital leaders have started a public relations campaign reaching out to a diverse group of community members

After Visalia, Calif., voters in 2016 defeated a proposed $327 million bond to bring Kaweah Health Care District’s hospital up to state-mandated seismic standards, hospital officials are scrambling to meet the 2030 deadline, according to an article on the Visalia Times website.

One proposal — building a half-scale model of the hospital's Mineral King wing and shaking it “really hard” to see if structural improvements were truly necessary — was axed last year.

Now hospital leaders have started a public relations campaign reaching out to a diverse group of community members to establish committees to oversee the hospital's services and future.

One of those committees — Hospital of the Future — is working to come up with funding alternatives that would allow Kaweah Delta to meet the state-mandated 2030 seismic retrofit requirements for hospital buildings.
