Canadian healthcare energy costs down, but spending is up

Government hospital funding is up by 59 percent

Over the past two years, the Canadian government has provided more than $1 billion in new funding to the hospital sector, a 59 percent increase, according to an article on the Chronicle Journal website.

Hospitals spend an average of only 1.6 percent of their total operating budgets on electricity bills. More than 98 percent of a hospital’s budget goes toward patient care.

Ontario hospitals are eligible for a range of programs, such as the saveONenergy audit and retrofit initiatives, which help lower their energy bills by becoming more energy efficient.

As of July 1, electricity rates for hospitals dropped by two to four percent because of the Fair Hydro Plan.
