Cancer Treatment Centers of America Facility Wins IIDA Design Award

A new six-story inpatient tower at Cancer Treatment Centers of America at Midwestern Regional Medical Center in Zion, Illinois, has been recognized with a local chapter award from the International Interior Design Association for Best Interior Design for a project over 10,000 square feet. The award was presented by the Tulsa City Center IIDA to Dewberry, which provided architecture, interior design and structural engineering for the project.

The new tower, which serves as the centerpiece of the hospital’s campus-wide modernization, offers 72 single-occupancy inpatient rooms complemented with amenities to improve the patient experience.

The inpatient tower is the latest major CTCA expansion designed by Dewberry, which also serves as the architect for other CTCA regional hospitals in Tulsa, Oklahoma; Goodyear, Arizona; Newnan, Georgia and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Other recent projects include surgery, imaging, radiation therapy, infusion, stem cell and clinic expansions.

As in previous CTCA projects, patients contributed input regarding the architectural and interior design, amenities and landscaping.

Amenities within the tower include family lounges on each floor, an outdoor courtyard and garden, a salon and spa, outpatient and family dining and a demonstration kitchen for nutrition education. The building also incorporates 48 guest rooms and children’s play and activity areas.

In addition to Dewberry, other design team members included Flynt & Kallenberger for mechanical/electrical engineering, Gewalt Hamilton for site/civil engineering, Teska for landscape architecture and Camacho for food service design. Construction management was provided by Riley Construction.

The next phase of construction, a four-story structure that links the new tower with the original facility, is scheduled for completion this month. Also designed by Dewberry, the addition will provide clinic space and wellness facilities and will improve circulation and access throughout the hospital.
