Cybersecurity Not Just A Technology Problem

Continual education and reinforcement of staff is key


A recent investigation by ProPublica found that medical images and health data belonging to more than 5 million Americans have been sitting on 187 unprotected servers, according to an article on the Forbes website.

New technology will not fix this problem, the article said. In addition, healthcare organizations should focus on:

• Continual education and reinforcement for everyone who uses the systems

• Encouraging everyone to think about how they use their tool

• Guidance - leadership must lead

• Consistency in reporting and communicating about security 

There has been a significant increase in ransomware attempts against organizations responding to the pandemic, according to an article on the Built in website.

The pandemic pushed hospital staff that were able to work remotely — departments like vendor support and administration — into the home office. Healthcare cybersecurity experts usually urge keeping as much activity inside the firewall of the facility as possible.
