Portland police are investigating the death of a patient who fell from a window on the sixth floor of the Richards Tower at Maine Medical Center, according to an article on the WMUR website.
Maine Medical Center spokesman Clay Holtzman said the deceased person was a male patient at the hospital. He was being treated for injuries he suffered in a March 9 motorcycle crash and had suffered serious head trauma and was in a medically induced coma for a period of time.
According to his daughter, the man was able to open his hospital window enough to get out.
According to Maine state law effective January 2009, new hospital buildings and renovations must adhere to health care guidelines from 2006. The guidelines say, "Operable windows are not required in patient rooms. If operable windows are provided in patient rooms or suites, operation of such windows shall be restricted to inhibit possible escape or suicide."
