When University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center set out to build a better hospital, executives started with patients and their families, according to an article on the Fierce Healthcare website.

Patient input helped designers to create an innovative facility.  The William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital in Dallas won a Rising Star Award for its design.

Patients suggestions led to:

• A separate discharge exit with designated parking and a pathway that avoids public spaces

• More comfortable furniture in patients' rooms, based on options that families were able to test
