Designing a hybrid operating room

Imaging equipment tools must now be permanently integrated into hybrid ORs

The 2014 edition of the "FGI Guidelines for Design and Construction of Hospitals and Outpatient Facilities" specifies that imaging equipment tools must now be permanently integrated into hybrid ORs, according to an article on the FacilityCare website.

To give surgical staff a clear vision of the space, 3D modeling of the room should be done early in the design phase, the article said. Then a full-scale mock-up should be constructed so any concerns can be identified, giving the design team a chance to address any challenges before beginning construction.

To allow for equipment upgrades, ORs should be installed in spaces with at least 750 square feet and 10-foot ceilings. Consideration for control rooms and equipment rooms, necessary for housing data and electrical equipment for the imaging device, also must be taken into account, the article said.
