A cybersecurity incident on Luminis Health Care disrupted computer systems at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Maryland last week, affecting appointments, scheduled services and access to MyChart, according to WBAL-TV 11 News.  

The Maryland Department of Health said Luminis alerted the state on August 31 that a cyber incident was affecting certain systems across the organization, leading the medical center to reroute patients and cancel various appointments and treatments. The health system did not provide details about the full scope of the disruption.  

This incident illustrates a broader challenge for healthcare facilities since hospital operations increasingly depend on reliable information technology. When systems are unavailable, the effects can reach all areas of operation and patient care.

Healthcare organizations across the country continue to report significant cybersecurity impacts. In a 2025 survey, the HIPAA Journal found that 93 percent of surveyed U.S. healthcare organizations experienced at least one cyberattack from 2024 to 2025, and 72 percent of those organizations reported disruptions to patient care. 

The financial impact is also increasing. The HIPAA Journal survey found that four times as many healthcare organizations experienced financial losses of at least $200,000 from cyberattacks in 2025. Additionally, 12 percent of healthcare respondents reported cyberattack-related losses exceeding $500,000 in 2025, compared to just 2 percent in 2024.
