Healthcare facility planners and designers are working with clinicians and facilities staff to improve infection prevention efforts from pre-design programming through specification, according to an article on the Medical Construction & Design website.

At the pre-design stage, planners develop programs to accommodate the scope of the hospital’s infection control goals — from well-located to a biocontainment unit.

Research has shown that the visibility of sinks directly impacts hand-washing and has an impact on levels of bacterial contamination on and around the sink area, the article said.

Another consideration involves the disposal of contaminated waste. Determining pathways for safely storing and exiting waste is a primary programming issue.
