Ensuring hospital power system reliability

Planning, design, installation, inspection, maintenance all play a part

Healthcare facility power systems must have high reliability and availability. Best practices throughout the planning, design, construction, installation and commissioning process all help ensure reliability, according to an article on the Health Facilities Management website.

Many design best practices are out of reach because of costs   — such as minimizing physical risks due to flooding, wind and other potential hazards.

Also, installing power systems that lessen the impact of equipment failure allows rapid response for isolation and repair of failed equipment.

Other best practices include both physical separation and fire separation between normal power equipment and emergency power equipment.
