Evidence of Zika found in tears

Study suggests contact with infected eyes may play a role in spreading the disease


The Zika virus is capable of infecting the eye and genomic material from the virus has been found in tears, according to an article on the Infection Control Today website.

A study by researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis suggests contact with infected eyes may play a role in spreading the disease

Eye infection raises the possibility that people could acquire Zika infection through contact with tears from infected people. 

Zika researchers are increasingly considering alternative routes of transmission because the virus is spreading more quickly than would be expected by mosquito-borne transmission alone.
