First U.S. hospital built on a community college campus

Holy Cross Germantown Hospital is open on the Montgomery College campus in Germantown, Md.

Holy Cross Germantown Hospital, which recently opened at Montgomery College in Germantown, Md., is the first U.S. hospital on a community college campus. according to an article on the Medical Construction & Design website.

The 237,000-square-foot, 93-bed Holy Cross offers medical, surgical, obstetric and emergency services and psychiatric care. It's the first new hospital built in the state of Maryland in more than 35 years.  It represents a partnership between the college and the hospital to train the next generation of nurses and healthcare workers.

The design of the hospital is a response to the evolving challenges of healthcare delivery, the article said. The hospital’s private patient rooms and staff zones were designed for efficiency and patient comfort and independence. Large windows provide daylight in patient rooms and decentralized nursing alcoves and visitor seating bays are located along the public concourses.
