Florida hospital sewage leak threatened patient safety

Venice Regional Bayfront Health's response to a large sewage leak at the hospital called inadequate

Venice Regional Bayfront Health's response to a large sewage leak at the hospital posed a thread to patients,  according to a report from the Florida Agency for Healthcare Administration.

The report cited 13 violations of state and federal law in the hospital’s handling of a sewage leak in the post-surgical orthopedic wing, according to an article on the Herald Tribune website.

The hospital’s staff told state investigators they saw sewage leaking down the walls across from patient rooms and along both sides of the hallways by the elevators in front of the nurses’ station, the article said.

Fire doors were closed to contain part of the leak, and blankets were used to control the water and guide it down the elevator.
