HVAC considerations in hybrid OR design

To maximize future flexibility, designers should consider using an integrated ceiling system rather than a monolithic design

When designing a hybrid operating room (OR), space planning is critical, according to a blog on the Today's Facility Manager website. A minimum of 650 square feet of clear floor space is required for new construction ORs, and 600 square feet for renovated ones, but depending on the imaging equipment included, a hybrid OR can be as much as 2,600 square feet.

Designing these ORs with HVAC requirements in mind is a must, the article said. When the priority is to reduce the potential for airborne particles to cause surgical site infections, unidirectional non-aspirating diffusers must be used in operating and procedure rooms.

To maximize future flexibility, designers should consider using an integrated ceiling system rather than a monolithic design, as the former allows for air distribution, lighting and access panels to be installed in much closer proximity than the latter, according to blogger Matt McLaurin.
