Healthcare facilities can do more to prevent infections

Hospital-acquired infections can be reduced with evidence-based prevention and control strategies

Hospital-acquired infections can be reduced by up to 55 percent with evidence-based prevention and control strategies, according to an article on the Science Daily website.

A review of 144 studies suggests that there is considerable room for improvement in infection prevention and control practices, regardless of the economic status of the country.

Researchers from University Hospital Zurich and Swissnoso, the Swiss National Center for Infection Control, reviewed studies published around the world between 2005 and 2016 to determine the proportion of HAIs prevented through infection control interventions in different economic settings.

The interventions consistently produced a 35 percent to 55 percent reduction in new infections.
