Healthcare facilities' energy efficiency improves air quality

Salt Lake City Op-Ed says healthcare facilities' energy efficiency efforts can impact community health

Intermountain Healthcare appreciates the impact that the operation of its facilities has on the local environment and air quality, according to an article on the Salt Lake City Tribune website.

The system's initiatives to reduce its footprint include promoting and participating in the Clean Air Challenge and the Salt Lake City Mayor's Skyline Challenge, installing solar at its supply chain center and the Intermountain Park City Hospital.

Intermountain is also expanding recycling efforts, promoting public transit to its employees, making changes to its automotive fleet and implementing energy efficiency upgrades such as LED lighting and boiler/chiller upgrades.

The system started with benchmarking its energy consumption. All of its hospitals and most of its clinics are now actively working toward Energy Star Certifications.
