High School Graduates Earn Life Safety Certificate From Koorsen Fire & Security

Six high school seniors have graduated with a life safety certification from Koorsen Fire and Security. This vocational program was created to help local high school students from Walker Career Center in their journey to becoming desirable candidates for reliable and lucrative jobs in the trade industry upon graduation.

Classes began at Koorsen Fire & Security’s nationally acclaimed Training Center on August 31, 2016. All students were seniors enrolled at Warren Central High School’s Walker Career Center currently pursuing the electrical, building and/or information technology disciplines. “We’re so proud of the diverse group of students who have completed the program with Koorsen,” says Tom Zornes, corporate manager with Koorsen Fire & Security. “We hope their new certification offers them an opportunity to pursue a career with Koorsen or another fire and life safety company in the future.”

Each week, students spent three hours at Koorsen’s Training Center where they participated in classroom lessons and hands-on training for the inspection and maintenance of fire protection and security systems and equipment.

During their graduation ceremony they received a Life Safety Certificate. They will then be eligible for internships at Koorsen Fire & Security, or any other life safety company in the city of Indianapolis. The certificate may also be eligible for college credits in a fire science degree at Vincennes University.

The vocational program at Koorsen has been developed over the past two years. Zornes, a corporate manager at the company, began developing the program after watching Governor Pence discuss the need to reinvest in vocational programs to help Indiana youth gain the skills they need to pursue careers in the trades.

This program will be extended to cover all of Central Indiana throughout the next several years. Koorsen is also working to expand the program to more Indiana colleges and universities so that the life safety certificate earned may be applicable for more college credits.
