Hospital cafeterias are offering more choices for quick snacks

Healthcare facilities focusing on healthy options

Chambersburg Hospital and the Fulton County Medical Center (FCMC) in McConnellsburg, Penn., as well as Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown, Md., are offering more healthy snacks to patients and visitors, according to an article on the USA Today Public Opinion website.

“All fryers were removed from our operation,” Sandra Baker, director of nutrition services at Meritus Medical Center, said in the article. “A nutrient analysis program called ‘Go, Slow, Whoa’ was instituted to help educate everyone on food choices and if foods fall into a category of ‘eat often,’ ‘eat in moderation’ or ‘best to avoid.’"

The healthy efforts extend to soup-and-sandwich shops. The Butcher Shoppe Micro Market at the Chambersburg Hospital and Lunch Box Café at FCMC offer healthier fare also.

The Lunch Box Café features a turbo oven, pizza choices, healthy smoothies, fresh fruits, soups and sandwiches. A nearby vending machine also has meal options and sandwiches.
