By Dan Hounsell, Senior Editor

To address the ongoing and growing threat of workplace violence in healthcare facilities, The Joint Commission is offering an array of resources designed to help managers prevent, detect and respond to incidents of workplace violence. The page provides links to materials developed by The Joint Commission, as well as governmenta resources and those from professional associations, such as the American Nurses Association and the American Hospital Association.

This document was created as a resource to assist Joint Commission-accredited hospitals and critical access hospitals in preparation for the new requirements that will be effective on 1/1/2022 regarding a security management plan. The Joint Commission standard EC.01.01.01 EP 5 requires the organization to develop a security management plan based on the organization’s facility circumstances.

New and revised requirements addressing workplace violence prevention programs have been released and will be effective on 1/1/2022.

The page also offers links to additional Joint Commission resources, as well as resources from federal, state and professional organizations. Joint Commission resources include: sentinel event alerts and quick safety newsletters; presentations; blog posts; research, an emergency management portal; Joint Commission resources newsletters; and Joint Commission resources and OSHA Alliance.
