Today, 52 percent of Kaiser Permanente members' more than 100 million encounters with company physicians are now virtual visits, according to an article on the Modern Healthcare website.
Kaiser Permanente CEO Bernard Tyson said the transition from physical to virtual visits has been enabled by the system's aggressive spending on information technology.
IT accounts for about 25 percent of the health system's $3.8 billion annual capital spend.
Members like the convenience of being able to get minor ailments looked at or get test results outside the doctor's office, Tyson said.
