Salina Regional Health Center in Salina, Kan., was recently scammed out of $1,500, according to an article on the KSAL website.
An employee at the hospital’s financial office received a call from someone claiming to be from Westar Energy.
The caller said that hospital accounts were past due, and service was about to be discontinued.
The employee was told to purchase $1,500 in prepaid credit cards and call back with the card code numbers to avoid power being shut off.
The employee did as instructed before hospital officials became suspicious and called police.
