L.A. officials want to delay seismic requirements to keep hospital open

Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors urging state officials to extend a deadline for Long Beach medical center

In a bid to find another operator for a Community Medical Center Long Beach set to close in July, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors is urging state officials to extend a deadline for Community Medical Center Long Beach to meet earthquake safety requirements so a new operator can be found, according to an article on the Los Angeles Times website.

The healthcare facility is scheduled to close in July.

The supervisors want to push the seismic retrofit deadline for Community Medical Center Long Beach from June 2019 to 2025.

MemorialCare Health System, the nonprofit group that operates the Long Beach hospital, announced March 5 that it would close in four months due to an inability to comply with state seismic requirements, citing an earthquake fault that runs directly below the site.
