La. Hospital Cares For Babies During Hurricane

The babies were moved to the main hospital in the system which has its own generator and was built to withstand hurricane force winds

Healthcare providers at Lake Charles Memorial Hospital for Women worked through the night to care for 19 babies as Hurricane Laura hit southwestern Louisiana, according to an article on the Modern Healthcare website.

Laura made landfall as a Category 4 storm, with winds of 150 mph. But, the babies, some on ventilators or eating through a feeding tube, came through the storm.

The babies were moved from the women's hospital to the main hospital in the system which has its own generator and  was built to withstand hurricane force winds.

The babies were transferred by ambulance to Lake Charles Memorial Hospital, and trucks carried needed equipment.

Testing requirements, the need for mask-wearing and social distancing made evacuations difficult.

According to an article on the NOLA.com website, evacuations, if needed, would likely happen earlier to give more time for additional patients and precautions.
