Loma Linda (Calif.) University Medical Center opened a new Women’s Cancer and Surgical Oncology Center on March 21, bringing gynecology and surgical oncologists together with medical and radiation oncologists under one holistic, tech-savvy roof.

“Bringing everyone together – both physically and figuratively – helps ensure comprehensive, seamless care for the patient,” said Director Mark Reeves, M.D., in a press release. “We’ve designed the center to encourage coordination and communication among all participants in a patient’s treatment – including physicians, nurses, therapists, surgeons, counselors, and the patients and their families themselves.”

The interior design of the center follows the continuing trend toward a more natural and holistic healing environment with a neutral color palette, artwork with a nature theme, and the use of natural elements in fabric and furnishings.

Information technology at the center also plays a part in helping patients better understand their diagnosis and participate in their treatment. The center includes a cancer resource center and a cancer-help kiosk linked to the National Cancer Institute to allow patients and their families access to information, including treatment options, medications, potential side effects and supportive care.

“By locating this resource center within the clinic itself, patients can take advantage of this learning opportunity while waiting to see their physician,” said Center Executive Director Judy Chatigny in a press release. “We also offer an electronic patient portal that allows patients to make their own physician appointments at a time convenient for them, provides patients access to their medical records, and allows patients to email questions directly to their physician.”

The cancer center is part of Loma Linda University Hospital’s health system. For more information, visit lomalindahealth.org.
