Mayo Clinic investing in Fla. healthcare facility

The nation’s biggest healthcare organizations are focusing on Florida


The Mayo Clinic will spend $100 million at its hospital in Jacksonville, Fla., to better position itself as a healthcare destination in the region, according to an article on the Star Tribune website.

The Cleveland Clinic and Johns Hopkins Medicine have also announced plans to grow their operations in southeast Florida and St. Petersburg. 

In February, New York’s Memorial Sloan Kettering announced plans for joint operation of a cancer center in the Miami area, while Houston’s M.D. Anderson recently teamed with a Jacksonville hospital to launch a cancer center.

Florida, is the third-largest state by population and among the fastest-growing. Nearly 20 percent of its 20.3 million residents are over age 65.
