Many nursing homes are located in southeastern or Gulf Coast states — the regions that are most exposed to annual hurricanes between June and November, making them particularly vulnerable, according to an article on the EDM Digest website.
Nursing homes opt to shelter in place in the face of a dangerous storm. Reasons include: it is too expensive, they don’t have the transportation, or they don’t have anywhere to go.
But while transportation during evacuations was an additional cost, it is usually offset by the extra cost for additional staff and overtime pay during shelter-in-place operations, the article said.
Either way, there are extra costs to stockpile food, water, medical supplies and daily care products.
