Ottawa hospital to install safety alarms after attack on nurse

Brockville Mental Health Centre is ordered to install electronic alarms, improve staff training and hire security guards

The Brockville Mental Health Centre in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, has been ordered by the province to install electronic alarms, improve staff training and hire security guards to patrol around the clock on its forensic unit following a violent attack on a nurse in 2014, according to an article on the Ottawa Citizen website.

That attack is the subject of a trial underway in which the Royal Ottawa Health Care Group, which operates the Brockville hospital, is charged with five counts of workplace safety violations.

The order was a mediated settlement between the hospital and two of its unions: the ONA and the Ontario Public Service Employees Union.

The Ontario Labour Review Board order compels the hospital to establish a security office on the unit and staff training must include defence against sharp or edged weapons.
