Pa. hospital expands for expected increase in births

The quickest and most cost-effective solution was to redesign and expand the current space

Forbes Hospital in Monroeville, Pa., has expanded its labor and birth areas to accommodate an expected 156 percent increase in births, according to an article on the Health Facilities Management website.

The project team decided the quickest and most cost-effective solution was to redesign and expand the current space. An adjacent medical-surgical unit was moved to another location.

The hospital adopted a labor, delivery and recovery (LDR) room model that provided a sufficient number of postpartum rooms to handle added capacity.

“Our design intent was to bring together the comforts of home with the details of a boutique hotel in a room that new mothers hope to be transferred to,” said Samara Wheaton, interior designer, IKM.
