Pomona Valley Hospital ES staff seeks ballot measure addressing infection rates, wages, staffing

Despite repairs, facility issues were ongoing.

Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center workers are seeking a ballot measure to improve wages and staffing levels for housekeeping personnel, according to an article on the San Gabriel Valley Tribune website.

Representatives for the hospital’s healthcare workers filed a notice of intent with the Pomona City Clerk’s office, the first step leading to the placement of a measure on the November 2018 ballot.

The proposed ballot measure calls for hospitals in Pomona, Calif., to increase the hours for housekeeping staff. If the hospitals have infection rates higher than national benchmarks, the facilities would have to increase housekeeping staff by 20 percent until they meet those benchmarks for three consecutive years, according to a statement from the Service Employees International Union-United Healthcare Workers West.

The hospitals would also have to increase minimum wage for employees to $18 an hour in January 2019 as a way to retain workers.
