Remodeling operating rooms with on-the-job safety in mind allows staff to move effortlessly and reduces risks of slips, trips and falls, according to an article on the Outpatient Surgery website.

ORs were commonly about one-third the size they are now. Surgical technology has outgrown them, presenting several major safety issues.

Once the bulky technology is rolled in and plugged into the wall outlets, a jungle of cords crisscrosses the room, creating obstacles for staff to step over, or, in some cases, duck under. 

The most valuable upgrade from a safety standpoint can be the installation of equipment booms. Their self-contained structures free up a lot of space.
