U.S. nursing homes have experienced a spike in new COVID-19 cases due to a community spread among the general population, according to an article on the MassLive website.
A recent report from The American Health Care Association and National Center for Assisted Living said the trend is especially troubling since many nursing homes and other long-term care facilities are still unable to acquire needed personal protective equipment.
The report is based on Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services data that these cases increased in July after having dropped in June.
Community spread is not the only potential issue. Pennsylvania health officials say the second wave of COVID-19 cases in state longterm care facilities has been caused by mistakes by the facilities, according to an article on the York Daily Record website.
A state-by-state breakdown shows 33 states with a positive coronavirus test rate of higher than five percent.
