Review of sterilizing procedures for reusable devices urged

CDC and FDA stressing public health need to properly maintain, clean and disinfect or sterilize devices


The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are alerting healthcare providers and facilities about the public health need to properly maintain, clean and disinfect or sterilize reusable medical devices, according to an article on the Infection Control Today website.

Healthcare facilities that use reusable medical devices are urged to review their reprocessing practices to ensure they are complying with all manufacturer directions and have policies and procedures that are consistent with current standards.

Healthcare facilities are being urged to have an expert in device reprocessing to assess their procedures. 

Facilities  are alo be told to provide training to all personnel who reprocess medical devices.
