'Sanctuary' sculpture inspired by disaster at Okla. hospital site

Artist took inspiration from the events surrounding the EF5 tornado that destroyed the Moore, Okla., hospital in 2013

The 'Sanctuary' sculpture outside the new Norman Regional Moore healthcare facility was inspired by the events surrounding the EF5 tornado that destroyed the original Moore, Okla., hospital in 2013, according to an article on the News OK website.

Because of the preparedness of the staff, no one inside the building was injured when the tornado struck, hospital officials said.

"This inspirational art piece will honor the courage and caring that took place on May 20, 2013, and inspire hope and healing for the future," said Erin Barnhart, executive director of the Norman Regional Health Foundation.

"Sanctuary" is more than 14 feet tall from the base and is a geometric matrix consisting of inner and outer surfaces of continuous three-way diagonal rods. The steel rods are powder-coated in colors representing the Oklahoma sunset: blue, pink, purple and gold.
