War Memorial Hospital in Sault Set. Marie in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula,  is bracing for a surge in COVID cases could overwhelm its ICU beds and small staff, according to an article on the Bridge Michigan website. 

Last week, five of those beds were filled; one with a COVID patient. Currently the hospital has enough of the COVID drug Remdesivir for 10 patients based on current supplies

The hospital waited 6 months for backordered disposable gloves, which finally arrived last week. 

Should be hospital reach capacity, the next hospital is 90 miles away the McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey.

Nursing homes and other smaller healthcare facilities may be hurt by the rush for N95 masks and other protective gear and stockpiling by larger facilities, according to a Modern Healthcare article

Larger healthcare facilities are stockpiling what they can to prepare for a feared wave of COVID-19 hospitalizations For an average hospital, a 90-day supply is $2 million worth of equipment. A July 14 letter from the American Health Care Association stated that almost  20 percent of nursing homes told the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention they either have no PPE or less than a week’s supply,
