The latest building automation systems (BAS) offer energy management features that allow hospital facilities managers to improve efficiency and save money, according to an article on the Health Facilities Management website.

These technological advances incorporate systems integration and use cloud technologies for data storage and computing. Hospitals are going beyond a typical building management systems to use  data to not only monitor and adjust, but to track, optimize, analyze, improve forecasting and have truly actionable information, the article said.

In the article, Laura Rygielski Preston, FACHE, vice president of the global health care practice at Trane,  said BAS advances for hospital energy management include:

• Comprehensive energy management software that incorporates algorithms for demand-based control of building systems

• Growth in systems integration and cloud technologies for data storage and computing

• The ability to gather data from building systems and equipment that allows for continuous commissioning and more intelligent services
