Specific heater-cooler linked to infections

CDC warning that one type of heater-cooler device could be spreading a serious bacterial infection

The CDC is warning that one type of heater-cooler device could be spreading a serious bacterial infection, according to an article on the Becker's Infection Control and Clinical Quality website.

The device is used in about 60 percent of bypass procedures in the U.S. each year.

After an investigation, the CDC said the infections are linked to the Stöckert 3T heater-cooler devices.

Officials believe the devices were contaminated with Mycobacterium chimaera, a species of NTM bacteria, during manufacturing, since the bacteria were found at the manufacturing site in Germany.
