Interior design students were challenged with a complex healthcare design project when they worked with Perkins+Will architects on the Boston's Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, according to an article on the Contract website.
The students were given the core and shell constraints along with a complex program. They researched, analyzed, and designed a solution to the program, which helped them to understand the end user and healthcare design in general.
The students' research topics included infection control, code requirements (ADA), patient experience, translational medicine, regenerative medicine, sustainability, and more.
After the research, a complex, multi-department, densely developed program was provided to each student, requiring them to research and understand the function of multiple spaces.
