Study focuses on better patient room cleaning methods

Researchers are using human factors engineering to optimize performance and processes

Researchers from Johns Hopkins Medicine’s division of infectious diseases and Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality are conducting a three-year study to measure and improve patient room cleaning and disinfection processes, according to an article on the Health Facilities Management website.

The researchers are using human factors engineering (HFE), the scientific study of how to optimize human performance and processes by designing and redesigning work systems.

The research is being funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Infection Prevention's Prevention Epicenter Program.

The study will explore the work systems, tools and technologies that environmental services workers use in cleaning and disinfecting patient care areas and will cover training, education and how the department is perceived.
