Superbug Closes Irish Hospital Ward

Several patients in St Luke’s General Hospital in Kilkenny were infected by CPE


A hospital ward in Kilkenny, Ireland, has been closed to new admissions due to a superbug, according to an article on the Breaking News website.

Several patients in St Luke’s General Hospital were infected with  Carbapenemase-Producing Enterobacterales (CPE).

Full infection prevention and control precautions are in place in the Geriatric Emergency Medicine Service ward.

The Infection Prevention and Control Team has protocols for identifying patients colonized or infected with resistant micro-organisms.

This is not the first time that hospitals in Ireland Have been hit with CPE, according to an earlier Breaking News article. A total of 21 cases of the potentially lethal CPE bug have been confirmed in Ireland in early 2018.
