Two Minnesota Nursing Homes Call National Guard To Help Contain COVID Outbreaks

Staff-shortage issues amplified by pandemic


The Minnesota National Guard has been called in to provide emergency staffing support at two nursing homes struggling to contain COVID outbreaks, according to an article on the Star-Tribune website.

Small teams of medical professionals  were sent to short-staffed facilities in Austin and Hibbing where dozens of residents and staff have been sickened. 

Both facilities have active outbreaks and are isolating infected residents in separate COVID-19 units.

The situation reflects how the virus is shifting toward smaller facilities in rural areas where staffing shortages are more severe.
